The Inside Scoop on Change

The Inside Scoop on Change
 Happy Friday!

I've been reflecting a lot this week on happiness and change. Coming home from tour always has a way of shaking things up. It takes me a little while to remember who I am outside of “tour Lindsay.” I always find myself reevaluating everything - my routines, my work, my priorities, even the stories I'm telling myself.

One thing I've always tried to do is document my personal transformation in real time. You all get to watch me figure things out while I'm figuring them out. I actually had a conversation with my friend, Jane, about this yesterday. It basically went something like, “I have no idea what I'm doing anymore.” We laughed. As a musician and creative herself, she totally understood where I was coming from. However, I've learned not to panic in those moments. Inspiration has a funny way of finding us when we stop trying to force it.

I've realized something over the years though. We can talk about our lives endlessly: our struggles, our wins, our feelings. As a coach, I hear problems all day long. We can listen to podcasts, read books, scroll for inspiration… but until we're willing to sit quietly with ourselves and untangle what's actually happening inside of us, nothing really changes.

There's another side to all of this: We can't trust everything we think. Our thoughts aren't facts. They're often old stories, old fears, and old programming replaying themselves. Learning to recognize the difference has changed my life.

I know I've caught myself saying some pretty awful things to myself. Things I'd never say to anyone else. And every time I do, I have to ask, “Is this actually true?” Our thoughts can be messy. And our emotions are ever changing. We can't trust everything we think. Period.

The key isn't having perfect thoughts. The key is the pivot. Catch the thought. Question it. Choose a better one. Then pay attention to what changes.

Where I place my attention is how I experience life. I don't just wake up and move through my day. I spend time creating it in my mind before I even get out of bed. For me, it starts before my feet hit the floor. I picture myself making my water and coffee. I spend a few quiet moments in gratitude, looking for miracles instead of problems. It takes intention.

If I spend my day rehearsing fear, the world suddenly becomes a very scary place. When I spend my day looking for all the beauty in life and the possibilities it holds, I begin to notice opportunities that have been here all along…in every area of my life.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is to pay attention. If you're carrying something heavy this week, don't outrun it. Sit with it. Write it down. Ask better questions. Listen for the answers beneath all the noise. Because sometimes the biggest shift isn't just up and changing your life, it's changing the conversation you have with yourself.

If you're in a season where you're ready to make those shifts, I have a few coaching appointments available. I'd love to walk alongside you.

Until next week…

I love you,

Lindsay M.
